"Champs" as we call him was born on monday night
30 October 2006 at 10:45 pm. He was 2 weeks over due and the night he was born we weren't
expecting him as Lady had eaten all her dinner and was quite settled. I decided to check her one last time before going to
bed and she was down. When we went a little closer we could hear her straining so knew the birth wasn't far off however, she
decided to get to her feet and so the bag was protruding. We decided to leave her alone and she soon laid back down and 15
minutes later our new boy was born. Once she had delivered she was happy for us to be there and check everything out. In the
low light I mistakenly thought we had a chestnut colt ! In the morning however I was so pleased to find he was a palomino.
Lady had a little trouble in that the placenta didn't come away for 4 hours and during that time because she was so uncomfortable
she didn't allow the little fellow to suckle. Every time he went to try and find the milk bar she would turn around and muzzle
him. I was starting to think we were going to have lots of work ahead of us.
I watched them for a number of hours and thought she was doing all the right things before I went
to bed. I was up again at 5;30am and found that everything was fine. He was suckling well , the placenta had passed all in
one piece and Lady was ready for a feed.

A well earned feed for Mum |
In comparison to Trix from last year our new colt is again approximately twice his size. When our
filly Iniki was born so big last year we thought it was because she was a different breed but it seems that Trix although
perfectly formed was tiny. As last year was our first breeding season we had no idea really so it was a big learning
curve for us. I know we learnt a lot from last years problems and only hope that this year will be all good.
